Alleged Assassination Plot
Against Manuel Zelaya Denounced in Honduras
TEGUCIGALPA - The Committee for the
Defense of Human Rights in Honduras reported
an alleged assassination plot against former
President Manuel Zelaya.
The president of that organization, Andres
Pavon, said the plan would be carried out in
case Zelaya decides to return home. It would
be implemented by Colombian assassins and
paramilitaries hired by coup structures that
still operate with impunity in Tegucigalpa.
In addition, Pavon said police commissioner
Danilo Orellana is a key piece in the
assassination plot, as he headed the Crisis
Office during the coup and was appointed
Director of Prisons of the Central American
nation.
The complaint was made three days after the
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
had confirmed the continuation of human
rights violations in Honduras after the
coup. It also said conditions are not ripe
for the return of the former statesman, who
is in the Dominican Republic.
