Teachers Better Equipped To Deal With Armed Students

Teachers are better equipped to confront students weapons in Costa Rica's schools thanks to a program by the Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) to better prepare them.

The problem tackles the problems of how to handle students coming to school armed, especially in areas like Limón and San José, most vulnerable to juvenile violence.

Today more than 1.000 schools are better prepared.

The program teachers teachers and school staff how to approach a student found carrying weapons before the arrival of the Fuerza Pública (police) on the scene.

According to the MEP an average of 439 aggressions are reported daily or more than 88.000 a year during the 200 day school year, in Costa Rica's schools.
