"Gran Fiesta"
For Nicaraguan
Mothers On
Sunday
May 30 is
Mother's Day in
Nicaragua (and
other countries
in the region),
and as such the
Asociación
Binacional in
Costa Rica is
organizing a "gran
fiesta" (big
party) for all
Nicaraguan
mothers in Costa
Rica.
In Nicaragua the
Día de la Madre
(Mother's Day)
the May 30 date
was chosen by
President
Anastasio Somoza
García because
it was the
birthday of
Casimira Sacasa,
the mother of
his wife. The
date has since
been celebrated
from the first
years of the
1940's.
The celebration
by the
Asociación
Binacional will
be at the Plaza
de las Garantías
Sociales in San
José and the day
is expected to
be filled with
music, games and
prizes and
traditional
Nicaraguan
dishes.
Fátima Aguirre
of the
Asociación
Binacional
explained that
the day is not
only for
Nicaraguan
mothers, but all
mothers in Costa
Rica who are far
from their
homeland.
The big party
kicks off at 9am
and the first
300 mothers to
arrive will be
given a number
to participate
in a prize from
products donated
by local
merchants.
In Costa Rica,
Mother's Day is
celebrated on
August 15th.
