Heavy Rains Due
To Low-Pressure
System And
Indication Of
Things To Come
This Rainy
Season
Are The heavy
rains of the
last couple of
days, fog and
lightning are
all due to a low
pressure system
that will last
at least until
tomorrow
(Wednesday),
according to the
Instituto
Meteorológico
Nacional (IMN),
the national
weather service.
Evelyn Quirós of
the IMN said the
low pressure
system is
holding near the
Pacific coast
but not on land,
with no change
expected in the
coming days.
This is all
normal for the
start of the
rainy season
that lasts into
November, that
is expected to
be more intense
than the past
year, with more
rain and
downpours.
Last year the
rainy season was
rather mild as
compared to a
typical season.
That was due to
the effects of
El Niño.
However, this
year, experts
say the effects
of La Niña will
be the cause of
increase
hurricanes and
tropical storms
that will affect
Costa Rica and
the cause of the
increase
rainfall.
This will also
mean possible
more flooding in
low lying areas
like Limón. The
Comisión
Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE)
- national
emergency
commission - has
already begun
work to face the
climatic
conditions.
Quirós added
that the weather
of the last
couple of days
is an indication
of the type of
rainy season we
are to expected.
In San José, for
two days in a
row it has
rained in the
middle of the
night and early
morning.
Josefinos have
woken up for two
days with light
rain and clouds.
The sun never
broke the clouds
on Monday.
Throughout the
country similar
conditions were
reported.
La Niña is a
coupled
ocean-atmosphere
phenomenon that
is the
counterpart of
El Niño as part
of the broader
El Niño-Southern
Oscillation
climate pattern.
During a period
of La Niña, the
sea surface
temperature
across the
equatorial
Eastern Central
Pacific Ocean
will be lower
than normal by
3-5 degrees
Celsius.
La Niña,
sometimes
informally
called "anti-El
Niño", is the
opposite of El
Niño, where the
latter
corresponds
instead to a
higher sea
surface
temperature by a
deviation of at
least 0.5 °C,
and its effects
are often the
reverse of those
of El Niño. El
Niño is famous
due to its
potentially
catastrophic
impact on the
weather along
both the Chilean
and Australian
coasts.
Furthermore, La
Niña is often
preceded by a
strong El Niño.
La Niña causes
mostly the
opposite effects
of El Niño, for
example, El Niño
would cause a
dry period,
while La Niña
would typically
cause a wet
