Arenal National Park Re-Opened

The Arenal volcano national park is now re-opened following Mondays activity by the colossus. The eruptions Monday afternoon included spewing geysers of lava, ash and toxic gases.

According to the Red Sismologica Nacional (RSN), Monday's activity is "normal" and there is no danger from the small eruptions.

A spokesperson for the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) added that there is no need for an alert level or the continued evacuation of the park located in La Fortuna, northwest of San José.

The Arenal and La Fortuna is one of Costa Rica's major tourist attractions and the park has scores of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shopping centres.

Arenal, with it's cone shape is the most active volcano in Costa Rica and considered one of the most ten active in the world.

Mini eruptions are common on a daily basis and on a clear night it provides tourists a spectacular show.

Arenal's last major eruption in July 1968 killed 89 people. Smaller eruptions have occurred at least six times over the past 35 years.
