Autopistas Del
Sol Responsible
For Accident
Damages On San
José - Caldera,
Says MOPT
The falling
rocks this
weekend on the
San José -
Caldera has
raised questions
of who is
responsible for
the damage
suffered by
drivers involved
in accidents on
the road.
Although the
road does not
belong to
Autopistas del
Sol, who
operates the
road under
concession, is
responsible for
damages,
according to the
ministro de
Obras Pública y
Transportes (MOPT),
Francisco
Jimenez.
The MOPT has
asked the
concessionaire
to improve the
conditions of
the road that
include clean
up, warnings and
better
monitoring.
The minister
said that there
are cases where
Autopistas del
Sol is refusing
to pay damages
incurred by
drivers using
the toll road
from rock falls
that have been
constant since
the road
officially
opened on
January 27,
2010, and
worsened with
the start of the
rainy season.
The problem of
the rocks on the
road and
possible rock
falls has many
drivers worried.
On Sunday a
motorcyclist hit
a gigantic rock
that fell on the
highway. The
motorcyclist,
who suffered
only cuts and
bruises, said
the could not
avoid the rock
that was in the
middle of the
road, in the
middle of the
night and no
lighting on that
section of the
highway.
His passenger
was taken to
hospital in
serious
condition, dying
this morning
(Wednesday). |
