Another Tránsito
Nabbed For
Corruption
Yet another
Tránsito
(traffic cop)
falls to
corruption, when
yesterday a 30
year veteran of
the Policía de
Tránsito
(traffic police)
was detained by
agents of the
Organismo de
Investigación
Judicial (OIJ)
for taking
bribes.
Luis Arce
Álvarez, who was
ready to retire
from the force,
was found taking
bribes from
owners of
illegal parked
cars in the area
of Cuesta de
Moras, near the
Legislative
Assembly
building.
The Tránsito
would extort the
car owners by
accepting
payment for not
confiscating
license plates
or issuing a
parking ticket.
Two vehicle
owners were also
detained by the
OIJ in the sting
on charges of
offering an
official a
bribe.
The OIJ sting
was carried out
before noon,
following a
three month
investigation
into alleged
corruption.
The OIJ report
says that
Álvarez would
targed
infractors,
remove the
license plate
and wait for the
owners of the
vehicles to
return, when the
"negotiation"
would begin.
The amounts
charged by
Álvarez ranged
from ¢5.000 to
¢20.000 colones
- in cash - for
the return of
the plates.
Since the
beginning of the
year, four
Tránsito have
been arrested
for corruption,
as the
Ministerio de
Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT)
target
corruption
within the
traffic police.
