International Observers at Colombia Presidential Elections

BOGOTA - Over 50 international observers from about 20 countries have arrived in the Colombian capital to witness the first round of the presidential elections on Sunday.

According to the National Register Office of the Civil State, the members of the so called International Technical Monitoring Mission will be attending today a seminar on their activities.

On Sunday, they will visit different voting stations, and will stay in the country until May 31, after the campaign to elect the president and vice president of the Republic for the 2010-2014 term is over.

It is an entirely technical mission that has the objective of verifying the voting process and electoral results, thus contributing to clean elections.

As part of the agreements signed, the mission's members must comply with the principles of impartiality and clearness, that is, no secret affairs can be disclosed in advance.

In addition, they meet with the representatives of the different political groups involved in the process, as well as governmental and electoral authorities, tour the country and the most representative areas, and witness the electoral campaign critical and constructively.
