Noemi Sanin Seeks To Become
First Female President of Colombia
BOGOTA - Noemi Sanin, a former ambassador to
Britain, is confident of becoming the first
female president in the history of Colombia
in the presidential elections scheduled for
Sunday.
Born in 1949 and a lawyer by training, Sanin
used to serve as minister of communications
and foreign affairs, and then the Colombian
ambassador to Venezuela, Spain and Britain.
She resigned from her post as ambassador to
Britain in July 2009 to run for the
country's top job.
She defeated former agriculture minister
Andres Felipe Arias to become the candidate
of the Conservative Party.
Now she is running third in polls, after
Juan Manuel Santos of the ruling Social
National Unity Party and Antanas Mockus of
the Green Party.
Her platform is based on the working program
"Work, Produce and Progress," aimed to
create small enterprises through the
financing of the state entities to achieve
self-sufficiency of the economy. |
