Alert in Panama for Credit Card Frauds

PANAMA - Panamanian authorities are closely monitoring the situation of credit card frauds committed in the country, in the face of an increase of such offense over the last five years.

According to the Direction of Judicial Investigation (DIJ) in the period from 2005 to 2009 1,136 cases were reported, most of them in 2007 (307).

Last year there were officially recorded 203 cases and from January to April 2010, 75 complaints of violations of this kind have been submitted.

The holder of the DIJ, Javier Carrillo, said the most widespread method is the so-called cloning, where criminals duplicated information from the magnetic stripe of the card.

Among the procedures identified in the investigations is also the placing of false readers in cash dispensers, having access to user passwords.

In last months the police managed to dismantle organized groups engaged in such illicit activity, made up by Colombian, Mexican, and Venezuelan citizens.
