World No Tobacco
Day In Costa
Rica Focuses On
Increase Of
Consumption By
Women
Tobacco
consumption by
Costa Rican
women aged 18 to
25 has tripled
in the past ten
years, according
to authorities
who launched an
alert to all
women in the
country. The
alert was made
in celebration
today of "World
No Tobacco Day"
or "Día Mundial
sin Tabaco" as
it is known in
Costa Rica.
The rise in
tobacco
consumption by
women in Costa
Rica is
alarming.
However, most
countries in the
world are
experiencing a
growth in
smoking by
women.
"It is an
exhortation to
women to take
care and do not
fall into
addiction
because all the
publicity is
directed to this
new risk group",
said Guiselle
Amador,
executive
director of the
Instituto sobre
Alcoholismo y
Farmacodependencia
(IAFA).
The IAFA
estimates there
are some 450.000
smokers in Costa
Rica.
World No Tobacco
Day is observed
around the world
every year on
May 31.It is
meant to
encourage a
24-hour period
of abstinence
from all forms
of tobacco
consumption
across the
globe.
The day is
further intended
to draw global
attention to the
widespread
prevalence of
tobacco use and
to negative
health effects,
which currently
lead to 5.4
million deaths
worldwide
annually. The
member states of
the World Health
Organization
(WHO) created
World No Tobacco
Day (WNTD) in
1987.
In the past
twenty years,
the day has been
met with both
enthusiasm and
resistance
across the globe
from
governments,
public health
organizations,
smokers,
growers, and the
tobacco
industry.
