Nicaragua's Legislature Approves Budget For Dredging and Legal Defense

Nicaragua's legislators on Tuesday approved the government spending of an additional 20 million Córdobas (us$1 million dollars) to continue the dredging of the San Juan river.

In addition the Asamblea de Nicaragua approved spending us$500.000 dollars for the government to take Costa Rica to the International Court of Justice at The Hague in the border dispute.

Legislator Walmaro Gutiérrez told the press that the funds are to defend Nicaragua's position and that the funds will come from cost cutting in the Presidencia (President's office), the Ministero de Hacienda (Finance Ministry), the Instituto Nicaragüense de Turismo (Tourism ministry) and the Consejo Supremo Electoral (Elections Tribunal), among others.

Last week Costa Rica filed a suit with the International Court against Nicaragua for environmental damage to its territory, the Isla Calero which is at the centre of dispute between the two countries>

Costa Rica claims the Calero as its own. So does Nicaragua and as such has begun the construction of a canal to change the flow of the river to the Caribbean Sea.
