Important Issues Still Blocked in Guatemalan Congress

Guatemala - Despite pressures and pending issues of national interest, the parliamentary group of Renewed Democratic Freedom (Lider) confirmed its intention to continue an inquiry in the Congress of Guatemala, now unable to conduct any business because of the inquiry.

The opposition bloc made an interrogation, so far without practical results, to the Labor Minister Mario Illescas, from the very beginning of the last term on January 14, which paralyzes by law any other work in that State power.

Lider will continue the questioning next Tuesday, coinciding with the deadline for lawmakers to approve a donation of 17.5 million USD allocated to treat patients with HIV, malaria and tuberculosis.

A UN body provided the resources, but on condition that legislators approve it by February 8 or the funds will be withdrawn, said the president of Congress, Roberto Alejos.

Meanwhile, Roberto Villate, head of Lider, said there are 10 to 20 questions to pose to Illescas.

Guatemalan deputies on Thursday took their usual weekend break without reaching consensus on that and other issues of importance to the country.
