Conflict

Rene
Castro,
Costa
Rica's
Foreign
Minister,
announced
Friday
that the
International
Court of
Justice
in The
Hague (ICJ)
will
hand
down its
decision
on the
Costa
Rica -
Nicaragua
conflict
on March
8, 2011.
The ICJ
is
expected
to read
its
verdict
at 3pm
(Holland
time) at
the
Peace
Palace,
in The
Hague.
"We have
to be
patient
a few
more
weeks
waiting
for
international
law to
respond",
said
Castro.
Castro
added
that if
Nicaragua
does not
abide by
the
Court
decision,
Costa
Rica
will be
forced
to
elevate
its case
to the
Security
Council
of the
United
Nations.
Costa
Rica, in
the
January
2011
hearing,
asked
the
Court
for
precautionary
measures
against
Nicaragua
to stop
the
dredging
operations
of the
San Juan
river
and the
removal
of its
troops
from the
Isla
Calero,
the area
that
both
countries
claim as
theirs.
The
measures
is to
stop the
environmental
damage
Nicaragua
is
alleged
to be
causing
in the
area
waiting
the case
to reach
a full
trial,
that
could be
four to
five
years
away.
The
conflict
began
last
October
when
Nicaraguan
troops
occupied
the Isla
Calero
or
Harbour
Head as
it is
known in
Nicaragua,
setting
up camp
and
hoisting
the
Nicaraguan
flag.
Costa
Rica
accused
Nicaragua
of
invading
its
territory,
while
Nicaragua
stayed
firm
that the
territory
belongs
to it
based on
"Google
maps",
explaining
that the
dredging
operations
and the
construction
of a
canal in
the area
is to
restore
the
river,
which
belongs
to
Nicaragua,
to its
original
course.
