Outrage in Guatemala over Bomb Attack

GUATEMALA -  Guatemalan society was closely following news about a bomb attack in that country amid outrage, distress, and impotence at the situation of violence.

The Monday attack using homemade explosives against a passenger bus in the capital has been widely condemned in the country, with people urging authorities to find those people responsible and punish them.

The UN Office for Human Rights in Guatemala also joined in the public condemnation, expressing dismay at the incident and criticizing the climate of insecurity in the country.

The office called on Guatemalan authorities to promptly conduct objective, efficient investigations of that attack and others committed in the past, and asked for punishment for those responsible, and for a halt to the escalation in violence.

A 19-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday as the main suspect in the attack, and as a possible member of a faction of the Mara 18 gang, blamed by Guatemalan authorities for the attack.

The condemnation of the criminal act has gone beyond borders, with the Mexican government reaffirming its support to fight organized crime.
