Nicaragua Reiterates Its Right to Sue US in The Hague

Managua -  Nicaragua could reopen its lawsuit against the United States in the International Court of Justice in the Hague for the U.S. dirty war of the 1980s.

President Daniel Ortega made that statement on Thursday at the opening of the new school year at the national university, UNAN, in the capital.

Nicaragua reserves the right to reopen that case, because the United States has never complied with the court ruling stipulating U.S. payment of 17 billion USD in compensation to Nicaragua, the Sandinista leader said.

Such compensation would amount at this time to some 58 billion USD, due to the devaluation of the U.S. dollar.

Nicaragua cannot forget that the United States has a debt to this country, after "authorities of the first stage of the Sandinista Popular Revolution showed that President Ronald Reagan supported and financed a war to attack our country," Ortega said.

According to the president, a lawsuit to make the United States comply with the ruling could be filed with the court if President Barack Obama is re-elected for a second term.
