Honduran
President
Acknowledges
Failure
in
Public
Safety

Honduras'
President
Porfirio
Lobo
has
admitted
the
failure
of
the
anti-organized
crime
fight,
which
claimed
the
lives
of
4,412
people
in
this
country
this
year.
In a
special
speech
on
Tuesday
evening,
the
president
said
that
he
will
reshuffle
Police,
institution
in
which
the
drug
trafficking
is
infiltrated,
to
revert
the
bad
results
in
that
area.
Lobo
also
explained
that
the
top
officials
dismissed
from
their
posts
three
or
four
days
ago
did
not
obtain
the
expected
results
in
their
ministries.
The
president,
who
took
office
in
January
2010,
removed
Security
Minister
Oscar
Alvarez,
vice
Minister
Armando
Calidonio,
and
the
undersecretary
of
that
ministry,
Roberto
Romero,
among
others,
from
their
posts
last
Saturday.
Pompeyo
Bonilla,
who
was
the
president
of
the
National
Commission
of
Telecommunications
(Conatel),
has
been
appointed
to
head
the
Security
Ministry.
An
official
report
reveals
that
Honduras
registered
77.5
violent
deaths
per
each
100,000
inhabitants
last
year.
