Guatemalan Daily Terms Esquipulas II Plan Forgotten

The Esquipulas II Plan, signed 25 years ago to reach peace in Central America, fell into oblivion, stated Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre, by warning that the zone has been plagued by drug trafficking and organized crime.

'It was 25 years today that the denominated Esquipulas II agreements were signed in Guatemala in 1987, whose importance and political courage to sign them do not seem to be important in this moment,' states the article of the mentioned daily.

According to the text, Central America is termed as one of the most violent regions of the world.

Of the statesmen who signed the document, Salvadorian Jose Napoleon Duarte and Honduran Jose Azcona already died, Guatemalan Vinicio Cerezo and Costa Rican Oscar Arias are still active in institutional policy, and Daniel Ortega is the president of Nicaragua.

The Esquipulas Peace Agreement emerges from an initiative in the mid 1980s to solve the military conflicts that plagued Central America.

It bears the name of an eastern Guatemalan locality, from the coastal department of Chiquimula, where the first meetings were held.
