Antismoking Law To Affect Their Business, Bar and Restaurants Owners Say

Owners of bars, restaurants, clubs, etc believe the new antismoking measures will greatly affect their business, because people will prefer to stay home to drink, where they can smoke.

Some bar owners contacted by Inside Costa Rica have say they are worried that the smoking ban will draw business away and customers will be upset when told to go outside to smoke.

Some bars owners say they will stop selling cigarettes to avoid penalties, but will wait until the regulations are published and the law takes effect.

In Costa Rica, only 15% admit to smoking. However, Costa Ricans are "social smokers", that is to say they don't consider themselves smokers, but will smoke when drinking at a bar or club.

The new antismoking law imposes a fine on those smoking in public places, including bars and restaurants and fines owners of businesses who allow smoking.

One option is the smoking or "vaping" of electronic cigarettes or E cigs.

E cigs do not burn tobacco or cause dangerous second hand smoke, containing a replaceable cartridge filled with liquid, whose main substances contained in the liquid are nicotine and propylene glycol. Electronic cigarettes are non–flammable products that use state of the art micro-electronic technology which provides smokers a real smoking experience without the fire, flame, tobacco, tar, carbon monoxide, ash, stub or smell found in real cigarettes.

With E cigs the smokers still get their nicotine, but don’t get any harmful side effects of smoking traditional cigarettes which contain real tobacco.
