Palo Verde Forest Fire
Consumers Almost
2.000 Hectares
Almost 2.000 hectares
have been lost due to a
forest fire that
continues to rage in the
national park Palo Verde
in Guanacaste, than has
been burning since
Tuesday.
Wilfram Murillo,
coordinating the Manejo
de Fuego del Área de
Conservación
Arenal-Tempisque,
assures that the fire is
almost under control
after days of burning
freely.
Murillo added that work
crews are working to
ensure that it does not
spread into the dry
forest nearby.
For their part, the
Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) -
national emergency
commission - has issued
a "yellow" alert for the
areas of Nicoya and
Hojancha as these
communities are greatly
affected by the smoke.
Firefighters have been
working around the clock
to bring the fire under
control, which according
to Murillo, is expected
by today. However, the
hot dry weather and
strong winds are
favouring the fire.
The trail of smoke is
big that it is
apparent on weather
satellite photos.
Park authorities fear
that the fire was
started by poachers. |
