Nicaragua: Losses Worth Millions for Strike
Nicaragua's business sector has reported millions of dollars in loss due to the transportation strike affecting the country in the last three days.

Storekeepers and producers in Rivas, Masaya and Carazo departments complained that strikers prevent their vehicles load with merchandise from heading for the capital and demanded a cessation of these actions.

Nearly 100 people were detained due to the transportation strike to demand a freezing of the price of oil by the government, according to authorities.

Police spokeswoman, Commissioner Major Vilma Reyes, warned that authorities will be tough against those who cause a breach of peace and damage property.

At least 80 percent of urban and interurban public transportation and cabs from most of the country's 17 departments have supported the protest, according to several sources.

The impact of the strike started to be felt today. However, there are some taxis and buses circulating in the capital.

Meanwhile, representatives of transportation cooperatives in the Atlantic Coast announced they will join the protest.
