Seven People Die As Bus Plunges Through
Bridge in
Orotina
The poor state of many of the bridges in
Costa Rica became the focus of the tragedy
this morning that claimed the lives of seven
people when a bus, loaded with passengers,
plunged into the Tárcoles river, between
Orotina and Turrubares, when the bridge gave
out.
The Cruz Roja confirmed that 38 passengers
were aboard the old yellow school bus that
was used for public transport in Costa Rica
with a capacity of 60.
At lest 15 of the passengers were sent to
the various clinics and hospitals close by.
The victims of the tragic accident are
identified as: Norma Jiménez Cerdas, Isabel
Artavia Granados, William Gutiérrez Chávez,
Natalia Meléndez Quesada, Efraín Marino
Santamaría, Arley Castro and William
Gutiérrez.
The bus left Turrubares at 6am as it did
every day en route to Orotina. However, on
this day it would not make it to its
destination.
The poor state of the bridge has been a
source of complaint by area residents on
many occasions.
The bridge hanging bridge was built between
1920 and 1924, and like many such other
bridges around the country it has received
little to no maintenance for decades.
Reports say that between 16 and 18
ambulances from Orotina, San Mateo and
Esparza attended the injured. |
