$50 billion Chinese canal project in Nicaragua to be further delayed

HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Group (HKND), a Chinese infrastructure firm, announced Wednesday that it was delaying the construction of a $50 billion canal across Nicaragua to late 2016, but gave no reason for its decision, according to reports.

The delay comes after the Britain-based ERM consulting company that performed the project's environmental impact assessment said several issues should be further researched before the project proceeds. Those issues include seismic risks to the locks and whether there is sufficient water to fill the 175-mile canal.

As many as 28,000 people scattered in villages and towns face the likelihood that their lands would be expropriated. The government pledges they will be better off, living in new settlements with a bit of cash in their pockets. But skepticism abounds. Ranchers are angry. They've held 44 marches and rallies in the past nine months. A few events have turned violent.
