Coffee Exports Up 25%
Costa Rican coffee
exports in April, the
7th month of the new
2007-08 crop cycle, were
up 25% to 241,866
(60-kilogram) bags, the
Instituto del Café de
Costa Rica
- Costa Rican Coffee
Institute- (Icafe), said
Monday.
This compares to Costa
Rican coffee exports of
193,406 bags in April
last year during the
2006-07 crop cycle,
Icafe said in its latest
monthly report on the
new harvest year
(October-September).
Total coffee shipments
since the beginning of
the 2007-08 cycle Oct
1st through April,
meanwhile, were up 9.6%
to 977,430 bags, from
891,710 bags in the
first seven months of
the 2006-07 harvest
year.
Total exports in Costa
Rica's 2006-07 crop
cycle ended up 4.7% at
1,471,742 bags, compared
to shipments of
1,405,890 bags in the
2005-06 crop cycle,
Icafe said last month.
But total Costa Rican
coffee exports for the
2006-07 crop year
(October-September),
however, were pegged to
reach 1,582,400 bags,
Icafe said earlier,
indicating that
significant stocks are
being carried over to
the next cycle.
Production in Costa
Rica's 2006-07 coffee
harvest, meanwhile,
ended up 5.3% to 1.84
million bags from output
in the 2005-06 harvest
of 1,747,676 bags.
According to Icafe
figures, an estimated
86% of the total
production is sold to
the export market based
on the last three years
average.
