One Bus Fare For Downtown Buses Proposed To Reduce Traffic Congestion

One Bus Fare For Downtown Buses Proposed To Reduce Traffic Congestion
All buses entering San José will have one fare starting in 2009, which will be ¢350 colones.

The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) - transportation authority - aims to reduce traffic congestion caused by bus drivers who have to take time to give riders change or do not count with sufficient coins.

The public bus system is now divided into 9 sectors, each having its route and point of destination to and from San José and each with its own fare.

The MOPT proposal will change all that in the name of efficiency, said the vice-minister of Transportes, Viviana Martín.

The proposal would mean only bus from each sector - a total of nine - would enter the downtown core, meaning people would have to transfer from other buses in the sector, but not have to pay an extra fare. The new system would reduce the number of buses into the downtown core as well.

In addition, Martín explained, that the situation will get even easier when riders can pay the bus fare with a special debit card and it will be easier to calibrate the collector machines if the fare is one.
