Colombia: Uribe, Use of Force Against Guerrilla

Bogotá -  Colombian President Alvaro Uribe ordered the Colombian Army and Police Friday to get more severe military actions against the guerrillas to liberate the retained prisoners by those armed groups by force.

During an act in the University of Antioquia, in the city of Medellín, the leader said that he called the members of the Army and the police to exercise a permanent pressure on those retained until they are liberated, starting Friday.

He pointed out that his orders included the increase of the operations, until the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) liberate all the soldiers and policemen.

With it, he ratified what has been expressed when he disregarded any exchange of prisoners, saying that the only humanitarian agreement is the liberation without any conditions.

The most recent positions of Uribe are completely opposed the claims of a growing sector of the Colombian society in favor of the dialogue between the litigants in the internal conflict.

In the last days, the Colombian Committee for Peace, promoter of an epistolary exchange with the FARC and the Army of National Liberation (ELN) has insisted on going toward a humanitarian agreement.

Also the Episcopal Conference was also pronounced in favor of the dialogue and a political solution to the conflict.

But Uribe has even changed in a few days radically, because hardly five days ago he manifested his agreement on carrying out an immediate dialogue and even achieve an exchange of prisoners.

The hardening of the government's position worries many in favor of peace negotiations.

Friday, former senator Luis Eladio Perez expressed that he did not understand why Uribe, when meeting with politician Alan Jara, liberated last week, was willing a possible agreement of peace with minimum conditions, and now he changes his determination.

Perez said he was confused by Uribe´s position, but reiterated that the Colombian Committed for Peace will continue insisting on achieving the guerrilla and the government reach to a dialogue in search of the humanitarian agreement.
