Estadio Nacional Ready
For the Wreckers Ball
Tomorrow
The old and legendary
Estadio Nacional
(National Stadium) in La
Sabana will see its last
soccer game today when
at 11:00am the
Universidad de Costa
Rica will face the
Brujas F.C., ending its
84 year history.
The building is
scheduled to be
demolished paving the
way for a new and modern
stadium that is being
built and paid for by
the government of china.
Osvaldo Pandolfo,
vice-minister of Salud
and president of the
Consejo de Deportes,
called the closing
"nostalgic" as the
current building will no
longer be used for any
more sporting events.
The stadium has many
good memories for many
as it had been an icon
for Costa Rican sporting
events for decades until
it grew old and the more
modern stadium, like the
Saprissa in Tibás and
Morera Soto in Alajuela.
Tomorrow, the
construction company
Meco is scheduled to
begin dismantling and
demolishing the
building, which it
expects to complete
within 15 days.
The Estadio Nacional
opened its doors on 29
December 1924,
inaugurated by the
administration of
president Ricardo
Jimenez and cost ˘30.000
colones at the time.
The new stadium to be
built on the site will
sit 35.000 fans and cost
us$72 million dollars
and be ready for use by
May 2010.
