Government will spend more on incentives and “perks” than salaries
October 2nd, 2012 – In “basic remunerations”, the government will be spending a total of approximately 777 billion colones, or about $1.5 billion USD in 2013. Basic remunerations are the standard salaries we told you about on September 28th.
Many of our readers wrote in wondering what additional incentives, bonuses, and perks these employees make in addition to those standard salaries, so we found out. And the answer is shocking – the government will actually spend more on incentives than salaries.
“Incentives on salaries,” as listed in the national budget, are listed at 793 billion colones – 16 billion colones (about $32 million) more than what will be paid in salaries.
The benefits are many, such as an extra month’s pay every December, known as aguinaldo, tenure bonuses for years served, “school salary” – money paid to those employees with children in school, and “other incentives.”
According to Federico Castro, Manager for the Controller’s Financial Administration Service Area, this is the first time that the entry for incentives is larger than the one for salaries. This “clearly provides evidence of the need for a public labor policy,” he said.
