November 27th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) José María Figueres, the former Costa Rican president, says he’d like to see Costa Rica become the “world’s largest economy free from oil,” according to a recently released proposal.
According to Figueres, the goal could be accomplished within 15 years, while turning Costa Rica into a major biofuel producer and consumer.
The proposal also advocates increased use of renewable sources of energy, as well as natural gas and hydrogen.
Accomplishing the oil-free goal would also require the active participation of ICE, RECOPE, and international research centers, according to the report.
An “International Clean Energy Center” is also proposed for Guanacaste, in hopes of attracting investment in the industry.
