Walmart faces 29 complaints from shoppers caught in chaos Saturday morning
December 5th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Ministry of Economy began an investigation on Monday, in order to find the exact cause of the chaos that occurred during a sale at Walmart stores in the early morning hours last Saturday.
As part of a promotion, Walmart began a sale moments after midnight Saturday morning.
29 people filed complaints in the Ministry of Economy on Monday, after chaos ensued at the San Sebastian location.
Even the Fuerza Publica (Public Police Force) was forced to intervene, in order to calm the angry and confused crowd at the San Sebastian Walmart.
The supermarket’s private security and clients confronted one another, as shoppers grew enraged over a price discrepancy on over 100 televisions that were on sale.
This, combined with fighting amongst shoppers to get their hands on the merchandise, resulted in a scene that forced police to respond.
Apparently, over 100 televisions were marked at a price of 17,800 colons ($35), when the actual price was supposed to be 178,000 colons ($350). As the crowds became enraged, and the uproar grew out of control, the company sold the televisions at the lower price and assumed the losses in an attempt to appease the angry crowd.
Representatives of the company defend themselves, and state that somebody altered the prices, and argue that this is all part of a “misunderstanding.”
Large crowds formed at other Walmart locations as well, though the most problems occurred at the San Sebastian location.
The company says it will also launch its own investigation.
