Government wants workers to get day off work for Obama visit

April 9th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Costa Rican government has plans to declare a “day of rest” in San Jose on Friday, May 3rd, a plan it hopes will keep as much commuter traffic off the streets as possible, in order to provide for President Barack Obama’s logistical and operational security during his visit.

 

“A day off [from work] would facilitate the movement of motorcades and also allow people to come and see [Obama],” Francisco Chacon, Communication Minister, said yesterday.

 

However, Chacon said last night in a message on Twitter that if the measure passes, it would only be mandatory for the public sector.

 

Such a decree was issued in 2008 when Chinese president, Hu Jintao, visited Costa Rica.  On that occasion, the decree applied only to non-essential public employees in San Jose.

So not only do the taxpayers have to fork over for extra security, be inconvenienced by re-routing traffic so that the Presidential cavalcades can smoothly pass without inconvenience or hazard, now government workers for sure and private workers possibly will be paid to wave little flags as though we really give a hoot. And the ultimate insult to those not enamored by all this hoop-de-la, we’ll have to endure publication of every facet of the foreign dignitaries visits and all the photo shoots of smiley faces and hand pumping for publicity sake. Anyone like to guess the cost of all this?
