Government forms panel to try to reduce electricity rates

October 23rd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) President Luis Guillermo Solis inaugurated this week a panel of more than 60 participants who will attempt to develop solutions and public policy to reduce the country’s high electricity prices, long seen as reducing the country’s competitiveness in the region.

 

The plan to form such a panel was announced by the Solis government shortly after the president’s May inauguration.

 

The panel will meet regularly between now and December to discuss issues of efficient electricity use, distribution and generation; ways to optimize and diversify the country’s energy matrix, as well as socio-environmental issues.

 

The work of the panel will culminate in April 2015 when it presents the VII National Energy Plan.

    FIRST, stop selling it to Panama for half of what Ticos and Gringos pay here in C.Rica. How is it they can sell it for 9cents a watt and charge 20 cents ( or so) to the people living here in C.Rica??? STILL MAKING MONEY AT THE 9 CENTS… Mostly CHEAP WATER ENERGY…. Look what Government official handing that DEPT and there is where the Cut needs to be.

    The first thing is fire the top 100 people at ICE, no benefits! Then reduce the pay and cut benefits by 90%.for the top 1000 people. Switch to natural gas for the generators.Stop building Hydro elect. Switch to Thermo electric , use the power of the Volcano’s.

      You got that right!! When will CR learn that a monopoly — especially a GOVERNMENTAL monopoly, is about the very worst way to go. But then again, apparently ticos think of this as more like a soccer game, in which one side wins and the other loses. ICE is the same way: THEY win but everyone else loses. The way things are set up here, it would be impossible to have a win-win situation; in fact, I strongly doubt they even know what that is.
