Aviation authorities urge caution, but no flight restrictions after Turrialba eruption
October 31st, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica’s civil aviation authorities are urging caution for aircraft traveling within 35 kilometers of the Turrialba Volcano and aircraft traveling below 19,000 feet, though there are currently no flight restrictions in place after Turrialba began erupting late Wednesday night, spewing tons of ash into the air that has now reached some one million residents.
Authorities said that neither international nor domestic flights face restrictions at this time, though airlines and pilots have been informed to be cautious and that restrictions could be put into effect at any time if deemed necessary.
Volcanic ash can pose many risks to aircraft, including engine failure.
