Ebola scare in Guanacaste after 14 illegal Somalis detained, some complaining of symptoms

November 3rd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rican health authorities were placed on alert over the weekend when authorities arrested 14 illegal immigrants from Somalia in Cañas, Guanacaste, at least one of which complained of Ebola-like symptoms.

 

Those exhibiting symptoms were taken to the Cañas Comprehensive Healthcare Center where tests confirmed that the symptoms were caused by the influenza virus, not Ebola.

 

The situation sparked fear with some residents, as passers-by reported seeing the Somali detainees being held in the courtyard of the police station wearing surgical masks as a preventive measure.

 

The group was detained after police stopped a vehicle in which they were traveling.  The driver, a Costa Rican identified by the last name Angulo, was arrested on suspicion of human trafficking.

 

The Somalis were placed into the custody of immigration officials and will likely face deportation.

    Yes because Somalia is in Western Africa, right?? Racial profiling at its finest.

      Enough already with calling everything “racism”. Yelling racism (or racial profiling) in cases where it may not exist IS racist. People are frightened of the Ebola virus, understandably, and Somalia is on the country list where Ebola is alive and well. The fact that its population is “black” is irrelevant except that some want to make an issue of it to yell RACISM. TJ- you any relation to Al Sharpton or his ilk? And profiling? How you do you feel getting on a flight with a contingent of mid-eastern garbed in burkas or other concealing garb knowing full well they got through security checks easily so as not to have C.A.I.R. on their asses for profiling? Me, I’m a little worried — and NOT because they are mid-Eastern but because they don’t get screened like so many of us are. Being a minority is a plus these day.
