President Solis calls U.S.-Cuba breakthrough “great news”

December 18th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) President Solis welcomed on Wednesday the reestablishment of diplomatic ties between the United States and Cuba, predicting a new chapter in relations between the U.S. and Latin America.

 

Solis called the thawing of the countries’ relationship “great news” and described previous policy as ineffective.

 

Solis is not alone amongst Latin American leaders praising the decision of U.S. president Barack Obama.  Even Washington’s leading adversary in the region, Venezuela, was quick to praise Obama.

 

“We have to recognize President Obama’s bold and historic gesture.  He has taken perhaps the most important step of his presidency,” said Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro.

 

While praising Obama’s decision to reestablish diplomatic relations with the island nation, many Latin American leaders are also hoping to see a full lifting of the decades-old trade embargo against Cuba.

 

““We hope to see more than today’s gestures, that the blockade against Cuba is definitely lifted and relations normalized for the good of the whole region,” said Chile’s foreign minister, Heraldo Munoz, according to Reuters.

    A few Canadians I have known and met over the years NOW go there for winter months. They enjoy Cuba stay with a family meet the local women. Claim the beaches are safe and their money goes a lot farther. So CR you got some competition a coming for the tourist dollar.. Good luck your going to need it.

    I went there 10yrs ago, the place is about to fall down , you can taste and feel the communism. The women are fat and mostly ugly, the food is bad, and there Havana Club Rum is terrible.When you return to Costa Rica you will be very happy.

    If Cuba is ever able to make a comeback Costa Rica and other destinations like Mexico and the DR will be in big trouble.

    If the embargo ends and investment money flows freely into Cuba again, the Castro experiment will end. If the government does not give in to change willingly, others will effectuate change for remuneration – capitalism will ultimately prevail and do what 50 years of embargo could not.

    If development is done intelligently and enough green spaces are left, Cuba could be the best draw for high-money tourism in the region. Otherwise, it will be just another overdeveloped tropical tourist trap. Its proximity to the US will work in its favor and appeal to tourists on a budget and the curious for a while, but big money will probably ruin that in short order, just as it is doing on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.;.
