Costa Rica’s ICE sets new record with 94 days of 100 percent clean power generation, requests rate hike

August 14th, 2015 (ICR News) Clean energy sources were used to generate 100 percent of the electricity in Costa Rica for 94 straight days, breaking the old record of 75 days set between January and March of this year, the state-owned Costa Rican Electricity Institute, or ICE, said.

No fossil fuels were burned between May 8 and Aug. 9 to generate electricity, cementing Costa Rica’s “world leadership” in the clean energy area, the ICE said.

“This reflects the success of the diversity of our electricity mix. Thermal sources are a necessary back-up for contingencies. We take advantage of our own sources, mainly water, efficiently and responsibly, giving us greater independence,” ICE electricity manager Luis Pacheco said.

Some 77.6 percent of the electricity generated during the period came from hydroelectric power plants; 12.34 percent was from geothermal sources; 10.05 percent came from wind power; and 0.01 percent from solar panels.

The streak ended on Monday, when the ICE had to burn fossil fuels to meet 1 percent of power demand.

Clean sources will account for nearly 93 percent of the electricity generated this year, the ICE said.

The swelling Lake Arenal reservoir, which is nearly 30 feet deeper than ICE forecasts said it would be this time of year, is no doubt contributing to ICE’s clean-energy run this year.

ICE spokesperson Luis Pacheco said this week that ICE is implementing a plan to take advantage of the swelling reservoir to generate additional electricity for export onto the grid serving neighboring countries like Panama and Nicaragua.

Despite the excess capacity and the cost savings from not needing to burn fossil fuels, however, ICE requested a rate hike of 13.7% to regulator ARESEP last week.

EFE contributed to this report.

The Management and Union of ICE is so corrupt there needs to be sweeping changes. Fire and jail the top 10 % of both. Cut pay and benefits 50% to all employees making over $1,000 a month. Then, audit all of the Government, and start privatizing.

    • dr meno

Start privatising, Jaa Jaa. Is not the problem with Capitalism. Greedy criminals want privatising to control and manipulate the masses. Leave CR alone with it’s soft socialism set up. It works fine. We need to kick out the central bank, they are the done pushing for privatising. Then the resources end up with their crony friends. Maybe you are a Bankster. You are what is wrong with the USA.

“It [Costa Rica's soft socialism] works fine? Jaa Jaa. Costa Rica is in debt over it’s head with probability of defaulting on its debts. Fine?!?!

YEs from ODIUS loans that were threaten to Laura to take. Laura and Oscar sold out the country. You need to wake up globally. CR could very well be the next Greece. CR needs to do what Iceland did, put their bankers in jail.

If you look at Privatizing, it saved England, Brazil and it could save CR, you sound like a limp wrested Liberal fool. Go back to the Kennedys

AND YOU need to be globally awake. CAPITALISM ehhh?? WOW why do we have the worst recession ever, and the news lies about the real situation. Why is Fascism o have taken over our politics? Why are the bankers stealing your pensions? Why are so many people unemployed? Why is the dollar going to collapse this year? Why, Why, Why so many wars over capitalist imperialism causing millions of deaths, including the economic sanctions against countries. Come on it doesn’t work. They forgot to calculate the human greed factor in the theory of capitalism.

JFK was the last good president the USA had. Obama will be the last president of the USA, he will cancel the 2016 upcoming elections through, Executive Order 13603 of March 16, 2012

Privatizing would likely end up with some higher up government officials, after a long paper trail in ownership of these company’s which would probably be worse and rates climbing at an even more rapid rate as they secure their retirement plans. I am in no way a fan of ICE but I feel they are the lesser of two evil’s.

      • http://therealnicaragua.com GringoLoco

The lesser of two evils is STILL evil…

        • Joe1047

I agree. But a true fix to the system here will never happen. I would rather it be in government hands than one or two select individuals (likely politicians with one goal in mind) as it would certainly be a monopoly here and quickly spiral out of control.

  • Yeims

Wow! This might mean ICE is opening up a whole new market, alarm clocks you could plug into the wall socket instead of using only battery powered ones. Very impressive if this pans out. 94 whole days!

  • mhogan

So Lake Arenal reservoir now exceeds ICE forecasts. And just when a government agency uses eco-terrorism to present the most dire circumstances to proclaim the need for higher consumer prices, Mother Nature messes up their plans. And when proven to be not the threat predicted — which was to cause higher electricity costs — they still increase the price to the consumer. ICE is win-win;citizens are lose-lose.

    • disgusted

I would like to know if any one can find out. How much per KWH are they selling it to Nicaragua or Panama? My hunch it less than we pay here.

Taking a natural resource IE water that all of the citizens should be compensated not just the government officials and CEO’S of the company. Mhogan you are so right it is a lose lose for us the consumer. When business have to pay higher price then residential driving up the cost here for everyone.

Pres. Solis promised so much like cutting taxes and bringing back jobs. To be more open and reform the mega government salaries. He has shown to be no different than the PLN presidents, Right Mr. President?

CR needs a leader real one who could shake up this country and do real reform.. However, I have no clue who that could be. They seem to be cut all from the same fabric here .. all out for their interest their pension on the backs of the poor here. Shameful
