Plane carrying former Costa Rican president crash lands without landing gear at San Jose airport

October 15th, 2015 (ICR News) The former president (1994-1998) of Costa Rica and National Liberation Party (PLN) chief, Jose Maria Figueres, got a scare Wednesday night when a plane in which he was traveling made a crash landing at the Tobias Bolanos Airport in Pavas.

 

Initial reports indicate that the twin-engine Piper PA-34-200 landed shortly before 6:00 p.m. without deploying its landing gear.  It was not immediately clear if pilot error or a mechanical problem was to blame.

 

The former president as well as two other passengers and the pilot were unharmed in the incident. 

 

Figueres was returning from a meeting in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste.

 

The incident is the second at the same airport in recent days.

 

On Saturday, October 10th, a private plane lost engine power and was forced to make an emergency landing in the grass short of the airport’s runway.  The three passengers onboard were also unharmed.

        Being that he is party chief of the PLN, I would imagine he was meeting with the local PLN candidate and local party leaders for Santa Cruz regarding their campaign for the upcoming municipal elections, but that’s just a guess.

    Interesting. All planes are equipped with warning sirens if the plane goes below a certain speed while the wheels are still up. Therefore, (a) the pilot is deaf, or (b) they disengaged the siren because it makes too much noise, and (c) the pilot is forgetful, or (d) the wheel mechanism doesn’t work either. The FAA posts a monthly Accident Report in the U.S. Stuff like this is not uncommon.

      They say there are two kinds of pilots that fly retractable gear. Those that have landed gear up and those that will land gear up.

    Had been in contact with one of his classmates several years ago, and he confirmed Jose did graduate USMA.

    During indoc they tell you, look to the man on your left and right. One of you will not graduate… wonders never cease…
