After 110 years of calm, Nicaragua’s Momotombo volcano explodes to life in fiery eruption

December 2nd, 2015 (ICR News) After 110 years of relative calm, Nicaragua’s Momotombo volcano roared back to life with a fiery eruption Wednesday morning.
A column of gas and ash shot more than 26,000 feet into the air Wednesday morning, after the volcano, located on the north end of Lake Managua, also known as Lake Xolotlan and not far from the city of Leon, began to show signs of seismic activity on Tuesday.
Government spokespeople in Nicaragua said that for the time being, the lava and ash flow is headed towards only sparsely populated areas. There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.
An eruption in 1610 forced residents of the then-capital city of Leon to relocate some 30 miles west. The ruins of the old city are preserved in Leon Viejo- a UNESCO World Heritage Site - today. The last eruption prior to this eruption was in 1905.
Nicaraguan emergency authorities are advising that anyone in the area maintain a distance of at least 6 kilometers from the volcano.
